Belted Kingfisher

Belted Kingfisher

I am starting to understand this kingfisher. I have had several chances to photograph him. He patrols a section of the DuPage River and has a few favorite perches. Sometimes he will catch a fish and bring it to this snag of dead branches just off shore. So I set up on the river bank about 30 feet away and waited. In about two hours he caught two fish. His pattern is to fly in from upriver and perch on a high branch, scan the river for about five minutes, catch a fish, and then bring it to this snag.He does not like me watching him, but I think he is more territorial than scared. He has buzzed me a few times, and once did a belly flop close enough to splash me with a few drops. I do not know if this is normal behavior, but it seemed strange to me since I always considered these birds to be skittish.View large on blackwww.hardrain1.com
